Word 2003: Unwanted vertical line in cross-reference

I haven't used the cross-reference function too often in Word. However, in a recent document, in each place where I have entered a cross reference (via Insert...Reference...Cross-reference) and have selected a reference to an existing Figure, there is a vertical line in the document next to the sentence where the cross-reference exists. Sometimes it is in the left margin and sometimes in the right margin. This mysterious vertical line appears in the printed version of the document.

How do I get rid of this vertical line?

Hi Kirby,

It sounds like you've activated 'Track Changes'. Check under Tools|Track Changes|Highlight Changes. If it's active, you'll want to deactivate it and accept the current changes.
