OLEXP 6 Just Hangs

A couple of weeks ago I had to do a system restore to get rid of a virus. I began using the reloaded Outlook Express, which I believe was updated as a result of an auto-update process, to version 6.00.2900.2180 sp 2. I have been using OE as my email client since then but yesterday, mid-day, the program just hangs anytime I click on a command. I use Task Manager to quit the program and I can open it again, see my Folders column and the text of the last email viewed. But any time I select an operation all I get is the flipping hourglass. Then I have to force quit and the process starts all over again.

I would uninstall and reinstall but I want to preserve my address book and email files. But to export them I need to be able to operate the application, and I can't do that. Suggestions? Can I download another copy of OLEXP from MS while this injured one is still here? I'm thinking maybe I can import from the bad program to the new one. Maybe?

I am able to retrieve emails on my (very dependable) iMac.

Re: OLEXP 6 Just Hangs

Well, I think my problem has been resolved. What happened, I think, when I went through the System Restore process using HP's on-board restore function (I have HP laptop), it not only reinstalled all apps and programs, but it updated any that were determined to be out of date and reset them to "factory" default status.

When I first bought the laptop, it came with a 3 month trail of MS Office. But I chose to use Outlook Express for email since I knew I wasn't going to shell out to continue using Office when it expired. Little did I know that System Restore re-enables all the trial versions of the software HP packages - waddya know! So when I started using OLEXP again, Office had enabled Outlook as the default email client. The 2 were in conflict with each other and ultimately caused OLEXP to hang up.

I reset all the email defaults and it looks like the hanging has been cured. If this process helps anyone else, my troubles will not have been a total waste.
