Microsoft Office XP help

I have Windows xp and have office xp installed on my computer. However, I was in the middle of an office xp update when my internet died on me, leaving me with a partial update. since then, I can not open office documents by simply clicking on their name (the .doc/.xls file). for instance, I have to open microsoft word (winword.exe), then open my document. if I try changing the "open with" to browse to find winword.exe, i get a "the product is not currently installed" error on my computer.

i tried to reinstall Office xp for students and teachers (I have disc 1 but i'm not sure if there's a second disc), but i got "the windows installer service could not be accessed. this can occur if ... the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. contact your support personnel for assistance." error.

Can somebody tell me whats going on and how to fix it? Thanks VERY VERY much.
