Hourglass when I open Word 2000

After I installed Encarta 2007 on my pc (XP SP3), when I go to open Word 2000, it brings up the normal window, but continues to 'hourglass' into infinity.
I tried uninstalling Encarta and Office 2000, then just reinstalling Office 2000, but it does the same thing.
Word worked perfectly for over 2 years on this machine up until this point.
Help!

did you run a repair install of Word? Sometimes .dll's and other shared files get modified during an install of an application. Then the older apps that used them can't find them.

I did, indeed.
I am now using openoffice's free product. Not sure why anyone would buy office when this product is available for free.
