Outlook connection to IMAP email--fighting with ZoneAlarm?

I have repeatedly tried to set up Outlook 2003 to communicate with my web-based email service, Fastmail.fm. It connects and receives messages but will not send. I have worked with Fastmail's tech support and they confirm that my Outlook is connecting with their servers correctly but say that they have heard numerous reports of similar problems from users who have ZoneAlarm Security Suite installed. I have tried turning ZA off and messages do APPEAR to send, but they do not arrive at their destinations and reappear in the Outbox next time Outlook is booted. Fastmail could only suggest I completely uninstall ZA, which I prefer not to do. They also suggested I try Thunderbird which they say is more standards-compliant than Outlook.

My computer is an HP Pavilion a630n running Win XP SP3 and Office 2003.

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.
