clipart problem

in Microsoft 2000 Word, the rotate and flip buttons in the toolbar are grayed out and will not work. does anybody know how to fix it so they will?

Was the document created with Word 2002?
Question: Why is it I can flip clip art in Word 2002 and not in Word 2000? I have a document created in 2002 with the same image in 2000 the rotate and flip menu options are greyed out. The image is in GIF format.

Answer: This feature was changed in Word 2002 (after all, you have to expect *some* new features in a new version!). But you may still be able to rotate/flip in Word 2000 if you first ungroup and regroup (if you can). Sometimes this has adverse effects on the resolution of the graphic, however.

Also, notice (in Word 2002/2003) that when you choose a different wrapping style, the square boxes around the picture are replaced with circles, and you have a green circle which allows you to freely rotate the picture to any angle you want. In the versions previous to 2002, this free rotation option was not available. In these versions, if you select the picture and go to the Draw button on the Drawing Toolbar and choose "Rotate or Flip", you will see everything is grayed out. The workaround for being able to free-rotate a picture in these versions, is to select the picture, go to the Draw button, select "Ungroup" and you will see LOTS of white boxes all over your picture, leave those boxes there and return to the Draw button and select "Group". (If Word warns you that you that this will change the file format, simply tell Word that is OK.) Now you will see the Rotate or Flip options are no longer grayed out and you can choose Free Rotate, because ungrouping and regrouping the picture changes the format to one that can be freely rotated. This works fine for Microsoft Clip Art, but for some picture types, Ungroup will also be grayed out, so the hack to get this option is to "Cut" the picture, then use Edit>Paste Special to paste it back in as a "Microsoft Drawing Object" and you will then have the Ungroup option. And, if none of this works, then your only option is to paste the picture into a graphics program (PhotoShop, etc.) and rotate in there, then paste it back into Word. If you haven't already, run Microsoft updates and get SP2 for Office 2000.

Try resetting the menus back to default:
How to Reset All Menus to Their Defaults
1. Start Word.
2. On the Tools menu, click Customize.
3. Click the Toolbars tab.
4. In the Toolbars list, click Menu Bar. Do not clear the Menu Bar check box.
5. Click Reset. The following message is displayed in the Reset Toolbar dialog box:
Reset changes made to 'Menu Bar' toolbar for:
Normal.dot
NOTE: If you are making changes to the menus of a custom template, make sure that the name of your custom template is displayed in this box.
6. Click OK, and then click Close.
