Microsoft Word Freezing - PLEASE HELP!

Hi Guys,
I have a problem with Microsoft Word 2000 (part of Office Pro pack).
Word doesn't open if I use the Word icon (from various locations), however, sometimes it will work if I open an old Word document.
But, the majority of the time the screen freezes, or, it shows up lists for document recoveries which I can't click on anyways- IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!! I can access Word approximately 10% of the time via opening an old document, once it's open I have no concerns, all runs perfectly.
The rest of office is working perfectly & my computer is running perfectly (seemingly). I've run numerous spyware/virus/reg fix programs & all have come up clean. I've checked for errors, defragd etc
When I've had Word open I used the 'detect & repair' function. I even re-installed Office. I've also changed the normal.dot to reset settings & moved files from the word startup folder to see if that worked. I've also disabled word add-ons. Can anyone help me?
Thanks!
Emma

Hi Emma !

Have you installed all the updates for your Office suite ?

http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/

They're at service pack 3 for Office 2000 (it's different from the SP3 for Windows). I'll move your thread to the MS Office support section.

Re: Microsoft Word Freezing - PLEASE HELP!

Oh thanks heaps!
My updates were current & tmp files deleted. Now I'm just going through the other processes listed on the links you gave me.
It seems deleting the temp files helped, however, I can only open around 50% of my word files. Could these files now be damaged?
Em

Hi Emma,
Probably not - I'd be more worried about the 50% you can't open.:

If, after going through the various steps outlined in the link I posted, you stll can't open the problem files, try either:
. using the 'recover text from any file' option under File|Open> "Files of type"; and/or
. changing their extension from doc to txt and using Notepad to find and copy out any meaningful content.

If you the 'recover text from any file' option, make sure to switch back to the std 'doc' file types afterwards - otherwise you might get a surprise next time you open an ordinary file

Re: Microsoft Word Freezing - PLEASE HELP!

Try to open your files on another computer. If they open fine they're not corrupt.

If the files are corrupt the recover text from file method advised by macropod will recover the text from them but all other informations (formatting, images, ...) will be lost.

Are the documents you can't open your own or documents that were created on other computers then sent to you ? Make sure the files are not .docx files, this is the new format used by Word 2007 and later. To show the full extension of a file in windows explorer go to tool => folder options => view and untick "hide extensions for known file types".

Here's the compatibility pack that allows Office 2000 to open Office 2007 files : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Make sure you have SP3 for Office 2000 installed first :
