Excell formula help!
Been trying to figure out a formula in Excel with no success. What I need is a way to covert or assign a numeric value to a name that is typed into a cell. Then create a formula that will add up those cells and display a total.
Example: Enter in A1 (john) A2 (Jim)--then have cell b1 display the total of A1 and A2 as 2. or Enter A1 (john) A2 (jim) A3 (jack)--then cell b1 would equal 3 Is this possible ? ![]() |

Re: Excell formula help!
try
COUNTA(A1:A3) this will return a count of the cells in that range that contain text.

Re: Excell formula help!
That's good, gistek. Or, if you want to reference the entire column A, you can put this in cell B1:
=COUNTA(A:A) which will allow cell B1 to be updated when additional entries are placed in column A. |
