Excel problem

I am working on a budget in Excel 2003. I am trying to pick up the subtotals from various sections of the budget to come up with total direct costs. No matter what method I use to get a total, the total cell ends up blank. Even if the cell shows the formula, the total amount does not appear. Help please!

Re: Excel problem

Hi, I'm not a tech, but I use Excel a lot.

Excel will do this if it detects a circular reference. It might be worth bringing up the circular reference toolbar to see if this is your problem.

Sorry if you already tried this,

Re: Excel problem

Sorry if this sounds a bit too obvious - but have you checked that the target cell (where the formula lives and where you want your answer) hasn't been inadvertently formatted as text of some other pesty option.

You can check by just doing a "1+1=" in that cell - if it comes out at 2 - then that's NOT the problem - but with XL - anything's worth a try

Re: Excel problem

Also, make sure you didn't put an "=" where you should have a "+"
If False is set to not show, you'll end up with an empty cell.

One other possibility is text color. If the text and background colors are the same, the cell will appear empty unless you highlight it.
