Opening doc in word 2000 created in word 97

I'm getting many--not all--"corrupted?" word doc's. NO error message BUT the text is in an unreadable form. Tried office converter pack but it is not working consistently, if at all. Also, tried converting them to .rtf.
Don't really pay the bucks for program to fix it, besides I can't find one that is rated very highly by users.

THANX, for any help, Bob

Hi

Have you tried opening the files with WordPad or Notepad? If so, you can probably recover text but any graphics and formatting would be lost. Alternatively open a new blank document and try inserting the old document - Insert > File... and browse to the file.

Only other thing I can think of would be to try installing OpenOffice - but don't let it take over your .doc or other file extensions - start the Word Processing application and use File > Open to see if it has any success.

Didn't work either. I have LOTS of files that I am now scared to open.

If you like you can attach the document, i can open it, resave it (if possible) and send it back. Other than that, make sure the extension is correct (ie. .doc)

It is very nice of you to offer the help but it is not going to help as I open future docs.
I even reinstalled office 97 but that didn't help either.

THANX again, Bob
