MS Word 2007 Close App Issue

Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed an intermittant issue with Word 2007 on my Vista laptop (Dell Inspirion 1721)

Sometimes when I close the last open word document a small window opens in the center of my screen saying that Word is trying to re-open and/or restore the session. After a few moments an error screen follows informing me that Word isn't able to recover the file.

Of course, as soon as I decided to post about this, the problem hasn't happened, so I can't post screen shots of the messages.

The issue seems to happen more frequently when I have had several documents open and/or have done more than minimum editing. However it has also happened once or twice when all I did was copy information from a word document to another file (sometimes Word, sometimes other apps).

I might think the issue is related to clipboard use, but there have been times that I have used the clipboard and had no problem closing Word.

---

Has anyone else run into this issue? Is there a fix for it? Or do I just need to get used to having to close stupid boxes when Word decides to be cranky?

Re: MS Word 2007 Close App Issue

This error now appears almost every time I close word. It's beginning to become really annoying.

When I tried to get help from MS, I was told that the problem doesn't exist.

This is not related to clipboard use, outlook use, or anything else I have tried.

Anyone?

Re: MS Word 2007 Close App Issue

have you tried clearing the Normal11.dot or Normal.dotm, whichever it contains?
in the past, i've had to clear the Normal.dot on the previous versions and it would help, so i wonder if you clear the Normal file for 2007 if this will help your solution

Re: MS Word 2007 Close App Issue

That was the first thing I tried. It didn't work for that problem, but it did make it so every new docx opens at 50% Zoom. Re-clearing the Normal templates again hasn't cleared that up, so I added the Zoom 100% to my Quick Tools.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. I'll keep playing with stuff to see if anything "accidentally" works. I've also asked one of the Carnegie Mellon SuperComputer geeks (ok, yes, it's my daughter) to check on it. She's also got some real good contacts in Google.

Re: MS Word 2007 Close App Issue

Have you tried the obvious things like a Repair on Word, or deleting the Registry key and letting Word re-register itself? The key should be here

My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\X.X\Word

I'm not sure what number v2007 is, but v2002 was 10.0 and v2003 was 11.0. Once you find it right click the Word folder and rename it to something as a backup. Then relaunch Word.

Re: MS Word 2007 Close App Issue

It looks like forcing Word to re-register might have worked.

In Vista, the registry is set up to look like a directory / subdirectory listing. After backing up the registry, I went into current user, microsoft, office folder and deleted the Word folder.

After rebooting, I opened and closed Word several times and the error message hasn't come up yet.

I haven't done any intensive editing yet, but I will post here again if the problem recurrs.

Next I'm going to try to fix the default file so it stops opening in microscopic format.
