Word 2002 is soooooooo slow

Word 2002 takes 10-15 sec to come on or turn off. It shows the opening page quickly, but takes forever until text can be entered. If I attempt to enter text before it is finished displaying everything, the entire screen turns blank until it is finished. I am running XP on a Dell 8300 computer with 3 ghz, 1 gb ram. I have "Repaired" Word, uninstalled and reinstalled Word from the original OEM disk, and have run "System Restore" several times. I have also deleted my tmp files and emptied my trash. I suspect Norton System Works or Norton Firewall as possible guilty parties, as I have had a lot of installation problems with Norton (i.e. having to reinstall several times before it works). I also have to turn off the Norton firewall in order to run a remote "March Networks" security program that I am responsible to monitor. The March program works fine when I turn Norton off and use the Windows firewall only. I also get a lot of "Program is not responding" popups. I then have to clear the popup and half the time it locks up. I then have to just turn the computer off without the proper shut down procedure. I also have Word Perfect which comes on very quickly if I choose to use it. No problem there. All other programs work normally.
