I am changing computers at work, they are not networked. I need to transfer my Outlook Files from my XP pro system to a Win 2000 system. I have a USB stick (2gb) how do I get my files and settings to transfer?

Re: Microsoft outlook
If you want your settings transferred, you can go to Start Menu > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office XP Save My Settings Wizard.
Make sure you first open any folder > tools > folder options > click on view tab > Show hidden files and folders. As for the files, you can just do a simple copy and paste. You should be able to find the files, actually folder, in: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft there, you should see a folder titled Outlook. Copy that folder to your flash drive. Then paste it to your new computer, basically at the same address where you found it on your old computer. When you open Outlook, click on File > Open > Outlook Data Files > direct it to the address where you pasted it. |

Re: Microsoft outlook
Also be sure to check the version. For instance, if you are going from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2002, 2002 will sometimes show the pst as an unknown windows application. You will need to set the compatibility.

Re: Microsoft outlook
First of all, since you only have 2GB available (or 4.7GB in case you'll be using a DVD), you need to compact the Outlook personal file (PST). To do this, File > Data File Management > Settings > Compact now; because, contrary to common belief, your PST file ain't become smaller when you simply delete part of its contents ( KB289987).
In case you'll be using a DVD, remember to copy the transfered file locally on the hard disk, before attempting the import ( You receive a "MAPI error 0X80004005" error message when you import a Personal Address Book file in Outlook). Now, about the settings & files transfer, it's pretty much what tosh9i already said. And don't neglect kinbard's comment, in case you're migrating to a different Outlook version (reference: The .pst file has a different format and folder size limit in Outlook 2007 and in Outlook 2003) - especially if you're downgrading to an earlier version; the different format and size limit can be a nightmare. Useful links: How to manage .pst files in Outlook 2002 and in Outlook 2003 How to Back Up, Restore, or Move Outlook Data in Outlook 97 How to move your personal folders (.pst) file in Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2007 How to copy your Personal Address Book to another computer For the bold 'n brave: Use the Office Profile Wizard to move over your settings. |
