Office 97 GIF import failure

I am completely baffled, and I'm supporting a spreadsheet that my client still tweaks on Excel 97, so I need to work in 97.

I suddenly cannot preview or insert (import) a GIF into either Excel or Word 97. This seems to have just happened, and I can't figure out where it went bad.

I can preview and import PNG, JPG, WMF, TIFF, and so on, but it can't handle GIF. I reinstalled Excel 97, copied the gifimp32.flt from a backup that I believe was good, and finally installed the "converter pack" from microsoft.

I've looked through the registry and can't see any GIF settings under office that are any different than the PNG or JPG settings.

My gifimp32.flt, after the converter pack, is 245,048 bytes, dated 10/26/2006.

If there's anyone out there who has a clue, that would be wonderful. I know this is old stuff, but it doesn't seem like it should be broken for just one type of filter, and I need to be able to see some graphics to support this client's old product, still used by a few folks.

Thanks.
