pagination keeps on spontaneously changing

I am trying to print a large document and after editing on screen and printing 225 pages, I find that the pagination is off. Why does this happen? It looks fine on screen and then seems to change on its own. Any way to avoid this?

Printer Make/Model

OS

Are all patches/updates loaded?

I don't know the printer make and model- it's one I use at the university. Does the printer make the difference? I never thought about that. I'm using Word 2002 on Windows XP. I haven't loaded any patches etc. I always worry about loading stuff because in the past I've loaded windows updates and they have messed up my system. Which patches do you recommend.
