can't restore my files...hel?
Hard drive crashed; replace with new one and Installed Windows XP and office. i believe the files were backed up with Nero and burned to cd. I have tried to restore my office word, excel and pictures, but can find no way to do it. The files are there, but after the extensions, like .doc .jpg etc, is another "dot extension". Before when I wanted to open files in Office folders, I could just click on the folder in the browse window and it would insert it. Now it inserts nothing and i am totally lost. I have trial version of Nero to see if I had to use that, but when it asks you to browse to chose a file, it will not insert the file, and I do not know how to find the address for that file to see if that will make a difference. I'm desperate, can anyone help?

Re: can't restore my files...hel?
The DOT files are all pre-formatted files and function as Word Document Templates.
They've been stored as templates or they wouldn't have that extension. I do realize that it can act rather erratic at times and carry out conversions without command. MS Word can open them as text files with embedded pictures. Have you tried opening them through the File>Open menu? |

Re: can't restore my files...hel?
OK, no worries.
![]() Those are created by Nero’s digital media suite as compressed backup files. If you right-click the file and choose "Open with Nero BackItUp Restore" you should receive a "Save as..." prompt from which you can save the file uncompressed and with its normal extension in whichever location you choose. What I'm saying is, you can choose the original extension there and then reopen it. Does this method work? Even if there's weird names of the file, when you open them what happens? |

Re: can't restore my files...hel?
Hello,
I am new here. My hard disk had some bad sectors and hence had to be replaced. I got a new hard disk and retreived my old files and got them transferred to the new hard disk. Now I have these jpeg files with and extension of *jpeg.nco. What do I do to get the pics back. Please help, I need the pics. |

Hello and welcome to TSF
![]() .nco extension comes from Nero, what version of Nero do you have installed? You might want to try this: This will keep the same filenames and change the extensions to jpg, with the option of extra compression if required. IrfanView, freeware www.tucows.com/preview/194967 |

Re: can't restore my files...hel?
Hi ,
No luck so far, any other suggestions? The irfanview did not work. There are no *.nco extensions there. I have a Nero ver. 6. But the copying was done by my engineer at his office. Shall check out from him. Will that help? |
