Problems inserting pictures in MS Word 97

I have MS Word 97 here and I am trying to insert pictures into a document. I have done this numerous times with other versions of Word and I'm pretty sure with this one also. I went to insert>from file> [the photos i'm trying to insert] and inserted them, but instead of a photo I got a blob of mixed colors. The computer I'm working on is an XP. I'm going to keep trying to solve the problem, but if anyone reads this and knows exactly what to do...I'll keep checking back here. Thanks!

PS. I can insert other pictures, but just not the ones that I want.

What format are they in? What size (pixel dimensions)?

JPEG, mostly. My supervisor is going to try putting them into a different format or something; hoping that will help. Pixels, not sure.
