Excel 2007

Anyone using Excel 2007 with large files yet? I have one with 550,000+ rows. At about 263 MB. Anyone have difficulty with this size of file with newer hardware? I have a computer that is about 4-5 years old, and before i bother upgrading my computer or getting a new one, I want to know if it is a problem with excel 2007 in general, or just with the power of my computer.

Re: Excel 2007

Hi

I don't have 2007, but that size of file is bound to cause some slowdown. MS have reworked the memory resources that XL uses - how much RAM do you have? Is there anything in the file, such as formatting that you could remove to help reduce the file size?

This is a good guide for optimising XL files:

Re: Excel 2007

I have a Pentium 4, 2.8GHz, with 512 MB RAM.
I would like to reduce the file size, it is imported from a tab delimited text file, and so formatting is not a real issue. It is a file comprised of an entire county's property assessment records, with each row representing a property within the county, of which there are over 550,000 properties. I would want to eliminate certain columns because they are unnecessary for my analysis, however, when it takes 5 minutes to just save the file, it becomes an arduous task.

Re: Excel 2007

Is everything in just one worksheet? You might want to consider splitting your data into several worksheets. If nothing else, it will make the whole thing easier to work with. In fact, I would also consider creating several workbooks, perhaps using the alphabet as break points, e.g. A-E, F-J etc etc.

Re: Excel 2007

Thanks for the reply, I know that I can split up the data; I wanted to know if anyone else had issues with 07 with newer computers, so that I can determine whether or not to upgrade my machine. Working with the file split up won't fit my needs.

I would imagine a couple of Gigs RAM would be required, plus a decent processor and plenty of hard disk space. What have you got so far?

Re: Excel 2007

Should be OK. I'm not sure I can suggest anything else to help, other than make sure all other apps are closed when working on the file. You could have a look round some of the specialised Excel forums like MrExcel or VBAExpress and see if anyone there has any ideas.

Re: Excel 2007

Not that TSF isn't top notch- but I might post this question over at MrExcel.com. I have been a member over there for some time and they are fantastic. For any and all things Excel- that is a great resource.
