Word and Notepad DEAD!!!

Hi,
MS Word has been out of action for a few months now on my PC,
so i've been using wordpad. In the last few days I've also lost access
to Notepad.

*********************************************************

when i try opening Microsoft Word,
it never completes opening it and everything just crashes.
So then i press ctrl-alt-del and a message comes up:

"The system is dangerously low in resources.
Would you like to terminmate the following application?
Microsoft Word[Not Responding]
YES NO CANCEL "

Once this has happened, if i try another operation then like opening notepad
I get the following message:

"There is not enough free memory to run this program.
Quit one or more programs and then try again
OK "

The problem only occurs if i try opening Word.
I tried re-installing the software but no change!

*********************************************************

Also, Notepad won't open for me the last couple of days. Pop up message says:
"The shortcut 'Notepad.Ink' refers to a location that is unavailable. The location could be on a harddrive on this computer, on a network, or on a differnt computer on your home network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or home network and try again."

Or if i try opening a saved notepad file it says:
"Windows cannot find Notepad.exe ...."

Anyone?
Thanks

Last time I came acrss the symptom of the Notepad.lnk not being found, it was a nasty virus doing the dirty work.

If your virus programs aren't up to date, try a free online scan at Trend Micro.

i actually had to remove a virus in the last couple of days.
i went into safemode and ran ad-aware,spybot,cleared default homepage and removed items from a hijackthis scan.
Dunno if i got everything.

on the subject, is it usual for black background messsage box to appear when browsing these forums warning you of 'nastys' detected on your system.
It's happened me and the link to solve these problems takes me here:

http://www.heretofind.com/sr/show.ph...pyware+removal

that's where i got suspicious cause when i was hit with the virus my default homepage was stuck on a dodgy link and also when i typed an address into the url box i was automatically sent to a www.heretofind.com search page

...though it might be possible notepad was removed by a virus and when the virus was removed it didn't bring notepad back???

Your link/shortcut is probably what got removed. Have you looked in your C:\Windows directory for the Notepad.exe file?

in c:\windows there's a file 'notepad.exe.bak'

that's all

also did a file search for "notepad" and found 8 items, no notepad.exe, just the .bak
notepad.cnt
notepad.chw
2 notepad help files
3 shortcuts

If you can, Rename that file (right click on file in Windows Explorer) by taking off the .bak from the end and press enter. This may 're-activate' your executable.
