I have recently purchased Microsoft office used off a friend when I bought the whole system, but the product is registered in his name. How do I re-register the product in my name??

I know when I have installed it and run into registration problems it asked me do you want to register on-line or by phone. If you choose by phone, the # should be displayed. Last time I did this it was an 800 # and no charge.
Might be different with the Mac Office.

First of all, I understand that you want to change the personal details that appear when an MS Office program opens, that say: "Registered to ..." So, if this is the piece of information you wish to change, then it is irrelevant to licensing - for licensing is an indispensable part of purchasing any software program, while registration is optional. And for some point on, MS products require activation, which is linked only to licensing. I quote from Microsoft Office Activation/Registration Privacy Statement:

EDIT: Oops, it obviously took me long enough to type, for you to act in the meantime... But realizing I share the same opinion with Microsoft, makes me a bit scared...
