Question Crashing Word

Word crashes every time I try and edit a document from the server. I thought it was a sharing thing, but when I save it to my computer's hard drive, it still crashes. Could there be some sort of virus on the network? Or it is a different sharing thing?

Do you think the problem is with my computer or my co-workers?

When you it "crashes", any messages or errors posted to the screen? If not check the event log on the computer. XP/Win2k Control Panel/Admin Tools/Comp Mang. Chk the application log.

I would also run a virus scan, Adware and Bot scan.

I have Norton (bleck) running all the time, do you really think it could be a virus? And when Word crashes, it just exits all documents open. No errors or anything. Where exacly is the application log? I looked for it but couldn't find it.

If your Norton is using the default configuration, (you did not change the settings) a virus is unlikely unless you have not updated the detection file.
The event viewer can be found here: Start/settings/control panel/administrative tools/event viewer/ application log. Look for RED. Double click and read the error.

Also check the system log for RED errors.
Is there any proplem with any other office app like excel?

There are no errors in my log. Only Word is affected. So I'm desperate. I tried to uninstall Office from my computer and it couldn't because the installation source could not be found. Where can I find it? Where does it need to be located on my hard drive?

In my experience office requires the installation CD to remove/install an application. If you do not have it you may be out of luck.

If you go to the www.technet.com site ( microsoft ) knowledge base search for MS office. Search for "word ending abnormally" or something like that.

You could use wordpad in a pinch. Not as robust, but will do the job.

This maybe a cause...

Word 2002 2002 Microsoft Corp. When you use Word to open a document that is stored on a Windows SharePoint Server by using the Web layout view feature. This feature does not currently work with Windows XP SP2.
