MSWord page number display

Small but irritating problem.

When writing in MSWord 2000 in "print layout" I used to be able to see the actual page number in the footer. Now I have to "print preview" or "print out" to see the page number. As it is, it only displays {page}.

Have I switched something off? How can I get the page number to display while writing normally?

Alt+F9

That turns off viewing Field codes.
