MS Office shortcut bar

I have just switched to OfficeXP Pro. 2003
It has no Office shortcut bar and I am really missing it, I thought it was very handy.
Is there an easy way to create your own shortcut bar.
I tried by right clicking the 'DeskTop', created a folder named 'Programs' and put the shortcuts I wanted in it.
This works in a very mundane sort of way but is not really satisfactory.
Main problem is it doesn't close after opening the shortcut to use.
There must be a better way!!!. I'm not cluey enough to do it.
