explorer.exe

Hi, here's my issue: (WinXP, 1gb ram)

Since 1/05, if I shut down, the only way to get my desktop to load and my taskbar to appear is to do a system restore. I do cntrl/alt/delete to get taskmgr and go through file/new task (run) to msconfig. That's my only option as otherwise, the only thing I see on the monitor when logging in is my wallpaper, and a partial border of the taskbar. If I hover my cursor over the area where my taskbar should be, the hourglass is displayed, but it just hangs there and never changes.

If I keep my pc on 24/7 then I can keep working in it but I'm now having a new issue with explorer as of today--in order to get a new window I need to do cntrl/n on the current window. If I try to open through the shortcut on my taskbar or my desktop, I get an Internet Explorer error "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".

Prior to 1/05, I was getting regular memory errors in explorer.exe (explorer.exe Application error--The instruction at .... referenced memory at .... The memory could not be "read".) I was also getting errors in wuauclt.exe, dwwin.exe, and svchost.exe. Currently, I still get the explorer.exe Application error, but I haven't been getting the others for the past month.

I have searched for answers to my issue and tried to fix this on my own, and I thought I had it fixed a couple days ago when I uninstalled ypager.exe, did a restart, and everything loaded normally (this also brought my explorer.exe process down from over 340,000 memory usage to a current 48,000). However, I then did Windows update and upon restarting was back to the same problem. So, I did a restore to the point prior to doing the Windows update and have kept my pc running since then.

Just let me know what further info you need from me, it would be great to get this resoloved, thank you!

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Try Running the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

Hi, and thank you very much for your reply....I ended up creating a new user in XP and copying my desktop, favorites, etc., to the new user. I don't have a problem now with the new user account.
