Confused IE 6.0 Opens very slowly...

Hi -- Internet Explorer 6.0 opens very slowly the first time I open it and everytime I open a new IE window. However, I have no problems with performance after the window is open and no performance problems with the PC or other applications. I've had this problem since I purchased the PC on December 27, 2005 -- a Sony VAIO VGC-RB52 with Win XP Media Center. I have Norton Antivirus 2006 and Webroot Spysweeper -- both are up to date and scans haven't shown any virus or malware/spyware as of today. Any ideas?

Go to norton antivirus and manually run the live update to make sure there are no patches which autoupdate failed to install.

Go to IE tools/ internet options/ general/temp internet files
delete files / delete all offline content
clearhistory
delete cookies.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've manually updated Norton and have cleared my history, cookies, cache, etc as you indicated. However, IE is still slow when opening the first time or when I open a new IE window. According to a yahoo widget that I have downloaded, CPU usage goes up to 80 percent or so for at least 5 of the 10 second period it takes when opening IE.

Update

Hi -- Apparently, Webroot's Spy Sweeper was causing part of the problem I was having with IE. I received a notice to update to version 4.5 and now, IE loads normally. Just wanted to pass this along in case this problem is happening for any other users.

Re: IE 6.0 Opens very slowly...

I had the same issue with IE 6 opening up slolwy. Once it did open, it would work fine.
I tried the registry solution where you delete a certain key but that didn't work. I did scans for malware, spyware and viruses, that didn't help either. I also did a Windows system scan, logged in as a different user thinking it might be a profile issue & even upgraded to the dreaded IE7 thinking it would resolve my issue. Nothing.
Finally, what did work for me was to disable the AIM add-on from Tools --> Manage add-ons.
THen and only then did my IE work the way it should.

If that does not work, try disabling all add-on's and launch your IE. Then add them 1 by 1.

You can also download Mozilla. I tried that also and it work fine.

Good luck!
