IE problem

I am working on a pc that has dial up. I have tried all kinds of things. it dials in and stays connected. When you click on IE it says can't find server. Installed SP2 no change. restored no change. pinged www.yahoo.com host cant be resolved. i am about to go insane. plz help

Are you definately seeing the connection icon in the taskbar? Have you tried a different modem yet?

What is your homepage set to? Are you sure your not getting redirected? How do you know its staying connected, if you cannot access the internet through any program then your not connected. Did you try to Ping your IP by using the ipconfig /all command?

There must be a bug somewhere. Create an internet connection through the network connections option in system tools.

Have you tired running the System File Checker? Thsi isnt WinME is it? SFC wont run on WINME

Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

Windows came preloaded and the person i am fixing this for can not find any recovery disk or anything. so what should i do?

TJ I figured it out. it could not translate urls in ip addresses. so i found a utility to fix it. i appreciate all of the assistance.
