Help! Specific websites won't load

I can't open www.shaw.ca, www.canadapost.ca, or www.superpages.ca on my computer. Firefox shows the error "The operation timed out when attempting to connect to XXX". All other webpages behave perfectly fine.

I've tried connecting on a few different browsers and none of them work, so it's not a browser problem. Also tried shutting down firewalls and antiviruses; no change. It's not a problem with the website itself because my friend's house can load the websites just fine.

Also the problem seems to be with the domain names: start.shaw.ca works and www.superpages.com works too.

Any suggestions?

Most likely it is not a problem with your computer; but with your ISP. For some reason the connection between the backbone you are on and the one these .ca sites are on is not functioning and you cannot get through.

What happens if you go to
http://www.google.ca

yep, Google.ca works. As does cbc.ca. I also did a bit more history searching, and college.hmco.com doesn't work...

I have a similar problem. I can not get www.google.com to load. I've tried with Firefox and IE and I've tried with cabe broadband, wireless broadband, WiFi, and dial-up. Other computers on the same conections will load the page, so it has to be something on my computer. I can get google.ca to load.

If this is XP go to start / run and type
cmd
hit enter
in the black box type
ipconfig /flushdns
hit enter
This will clear the dns cache which XP maintains so it does not have to query your ISP for the dns for sites you have previously visited. Often if you visit a site which is down, it will get redirected to a page unavailable site. Then the dns cache remembers this redirect and thinks that if you ever visit the site again you want to be told that it is unavailable.

Wait wait wait.
You never mentioned you were getting redirected to an alternate search site.
This is a sure sign of a spyware infestation like coolwebsearch which has entered registry or host file redirection for certain sites.

Please download
Mcafee stinger multivirus removal tool
Install and run

Spybot search and destroy
Ad aware personal form Lavasoft
Install, update, run, check for problems , fix problems .
A Squared trojan remover
Download, install, update, scan and fix.

Also, double check ; are you typing the full url in or are you doing an autofill?
Sogosearch registered *.com.net and *.ca.net and a bunch of others If your browser is set to append .net to the thing in the address bar when it cannot connect to the original entry (Instead of .com ) it will get to sogosearch.

In IE go to tools/ internet options/ content / autocomplete
Click the clear forms button and uncheck use autocomplete for web addresses

You may also have to go to tools /internet options/ advanced / browsing
uncheck use inline autocomplete.

Try pasting this IP into the address bar and press enter
216.239.59.104
That is direct to the google.ca server

Tried all you suggested and no good. Sometimes it goes to msn search and others its sogosearch. I always type the full url. I even tryed turning off windows restore and reruning the virusscans. No good. Yahoo.com also does not work. And using msnsearch or sogo search to find google.com I get page can not be displayed. It seems to methat something is bloking that page (and yahoo) from coming up at all. This is bloody anoying and realy inconvenient.

Well post your hijackthis log so we can have someone look it over and see if we can figure out just what is going on.

First Steps at Removing Malware and Posting a HiJackThis Log
We will handle moving your thread to the HijackThis Log board at an appropriate time. Please keep your replies in this one thread so that the entire history remains for review.

The following are the steps recommended by Geekgirl TJ

On-line Scanners
Scan your pc with both of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
Housecall. Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and install: HiJackThis.

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents, as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Then doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do A System Scan And Save Log". Make sure all Windows and Browsers are closed.
When the scan is finished, best to save your text file in the same folder as where you put HiJackthis.

Create a New Topic and include a fresh HJT log in HiJackThisLog Help Forum and Copy/Paste the info from your saved Hijackthis log file into your new topic.

A Moderator/ Security Team Analyst will give you instructions.

***DO NOT TRY TO FIX ANYTHING, MAJOR DAMAGE CAN BE DONE TO YOUR SYSTEM IF THIS TOOL IS USED INCORRECTLY, PLEASE WAIT FOR AN ANALYST/MODERATOR TO GIVE YOU INSTRUCTIONS***

Always describe your problem and any programs you have used to try to resolve your issue. Your description can go a long way to solving/repairing your particular issue.
