Roll Eyes Link Buttons not appearing ...

I have recently changed my PC and am now using XP as opposed to 98SE (Whether that has any bearing on the problem I do not know.)
I will be the first to admit that I am not a computer whizz and so apologise in advance if this is very simply resolvable.
I am noticing on websites that I view on my new machine that link buttons are not being properly displayed. For instance as I post this the link buttons showing above on this page are 'Home', 'Log in', 'F.A.Q.' and 'Search' Where the second link button should be, there is just a white box with a red cross in the corner and if I place my cursor over this box and click, nothing happens. Also whilst typing this message for the forum, where I have titled it 'Link Buttons not appearing ...' there is a similar box with a red cross in it right next to the title.
This happens on a number, though not all, of my 'Favourite' sites. One in particular all the link buttons to various other sections of the site display as a white box with a red cross and again nothing happens when you click on them. When the pages are called up, there are no error messages displayed and the word done appears at the bottom left corner. The sites work just fine on my old PC.
I have IE6 on both machines. My Microsoft updates are all up to date.
I wonder if anyone may be able to please enlighten me as to what I may be doing wrong and how to rectify it.
Thanks in anticipation

I have never had the chance to work long enough on such a case. But i am pretty sure that is a corruption within internet explorer caused by malicious software. Your system might be infected and this might be an indication. Check for malware first. Click on greyknights link below and follow the steps. Upon completion of the removal process i do not believe that the issue will be fixed. I would do a repair installation of the operating system but let me first do some more research on how to repair it instead of attempt to repair the whole operating system. You can start the cleaning. ( even it is not malware generated it doesnt hurt to have a clean up since 9/10 computers is believed to be infected )

Link Buttons ...

Thanks for that.
I have run the malware and it removed 7.5mb of stuff from the PC - which I imagine to be quite a substantial amount ?
I will await your findings before going any further and also because I do not actually know how to do a repair installation of the operating system. I'm not really knowledgeable on the workings of my PC, but am not afraid to follow instruction to clear the problem.
Thanks again for your reply.
