Installation problem from IE 5.5...

Hey I'm new here, Just got the internet and tried to install a newer version of internet explorer but I get a message box saying that there was an old installation that was not complete. I tried the registry edit as suggested by microsoft (Grrrr) but it hasn't worked. can anyone suggest how I can fix it or get round the problem so I can install a newer version of IE?!?!?

I'm soooo annoyed with it
