Exclamation Mjor pbms with IE6 (XP SP2): links don't work, pages won't load properly

Hi all,

I have major pbms with IE6, many a site I used to visit which was perfectly fine now causes me stress and bafflement... javascripts don't work right (simple "click to open" picture is transformed into many click-click- click action before anything happens - when it does happen), some links just won't open (even if I right click and then select 'open link' or 'open link in new window').
Now, the worst case is with this entire website that won't work: my Uni library page loads (or seems to) but there are many items missing, like the search tab is simply not displayed (like other useful tabs) on the page anymore, hence no access to the search form, hence, no access to ressources... (I tried for 3 weeks everyday and thought they were repairing the site until I asked my friend to try from her place, runs XP and IE6 too ... and it worked for her) this really gives me grief ;-) because I guess it can happen with many other useful sites, and I won't know if it comes from my comp of if the site's just gone (sometimes, I get blank pages too... but no error message...).

The pbm with links sorts itself out most of the time with Firefox, as well as the javascript pbm (opening pictures, but then Mozilla won't play the embedded music on the website) but as far as my Uni Library website is concerned, I get the same pbm with Firefox. I have run Spybot several times, keeps sayig my computer's clean. Needless to say a few weeks ago with Win 2000, everything was peeeeer-fect! (until the comp crashed that is... ;-))

I have tried many things, but I don't know what to do next, please, can you help?

Thanks

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Try IEFix

Click the Apply button

You'll be prompted for the Operating System CD or the Service Pack Files location:

If you're using Windows 2000/XP, insert the Operating System CD. For OEM systems, point to the Operating System source path when prompted. If you've applied a Service Pack separately, you need to insert the Slipstreamed Operating System CD (if you have one) or point the installer to the ServicePack source path when prompted (see Fig 2 below). Mention the path as "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386" or "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles"

If you don't have the Windows installation CD, and if the installation source files are not present in the hard disk, you may click Cancel. IEFix will continue with DLL registration part.

Restart Windows

major IE6 pbms - attempts to solve'em

Hi,
and thanks for the suggestions,

I've started with the Hijackthis log (posted where indicated), am waiting for an answer from this side before trying the IEfix (I read somewhere that it was a kind of last resort solution, and I'm not too familiar with changing anything in the registry, so I'll wait a little bit before I take any extreme step ;-).
By the way, how do I save my registry before modifying it? And I didn't install Win XP myself on this computer, as it was at a friend's for repair at the time, he did it, and I don' have a CD or anything, so how do I proceed in this case with IEFix (what's "OEM" by the way ;-))?

EEK! more and more pbms

Hi again,

Well, before I try this IE fix, I'd like to know if anybody has another idea because in the past few days I've been having major pbms with Mozilla Firefox too!
It often crashes, and on first start (like, in the morning), just won't open saying "the default profile is already in use", so it can't use it, I even had to create a new profile, obviously losing all the bookmarks and settings, tried to import bookmarks from IE, crashed the whole thing. Also, when it crashes, it remains in the tray, I can't shut it down even through the task manager, and the C.U. gets to 100% and stays there. After a restart of the computer, it works alright, but under the new profile I created two days ago.
How strange is that?
IE crashes less often than Firefox.

I've run virus scans and spybot, nothing. I've posted my log and was told there was nothing wrong but the guy suggested I try and shut down my firewall McAfee, I did try, I still couldn't access the website (Uni Library) I mentioned before (I only used that one website as a test, as last time I shut down the firewall for longer than a few seconds, I got about a hundred trojan horses and viruses in less than 5mn.)

So it seems that ANY browser jams in my system. Could that come from something else we haven't thought about yet?

Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.
K

You could try to uninstall Firefox. Then Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

Then reinstall Firefox and see how it runs . If your still having issues you can do a Repair installation. You will not lose any of your programs but you will need to reinstall your critical update and service packs.

hurray!

Hi,

Following Microbell's advice in the "HijackthisLog Help forum", I concentrated on Mc Afee, tried to shut it down, nothing changed, but, not giving up, I decided to give this idea a try, so I unplugged my internet cabe to be on the safe side, uninstalled it completely, installed ZoneAlarm so as not to be online unprotected... plugged the DSL cable back, and everything's back to normal now!!
My browsers - both Mozilla and IE6 work fine, no more crashing, all the websites accessible again, etc.

So, problem solved (well I still don't know why McAfee did this as it used to work just fine with Win 2000 - but at least, I've got a computer in working order now).

So thanks again all of you for helping me narrowing down the possible causes and making valuable suggestions.

K
PS I don't know how to mark my thread "solved" so I'll let one of you guys do it.
