IE and Firefow do not display web pages

I installed the new ADSL connection from my girlfriend on her portable but I have a weird problem. While the ADSL connection is perfectly working (I see the packets on the line), IE and also Firefox refuse to display any web pages. I check the connection not only on his new ADSL connection from Versatel but also on my internet connection from telenet (Belgium cable) and none of them is working.
I do not use any firewall and I am not yet with SP2.
Could you help me ?

Regards

Can you do any Internet access? Update AV programs, etc.?

Here's a couple of things you can try to reset the machine.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset [log_file_name]

Note: the log_file_name needs to be specified, e.g. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Still not working

Dear friends,

I try your both recommendations without success so far (NB: command winsock does not exist on my computer ??).
Please note that the ADSL and cable connections are perfectly working; I receive a correct IP address and the packets are visible on the lines. I try both IE and Mozilla but none of them is working. Do you have please other suggestions 'cause I'm lost ?

Thanxs in advance

Can you ping an external site by name or IP address? Try the following commands, open a command prompt and type:

PING 66.94.234.13

if that works

PING yahoo.com

Let us know what your result is.

It appears you are not connected to the Internet at all. Try this:

Open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

Well, you don't appear to be connected at all, hence the autoconfiguration address. At least, I think that's what it is, my French being somewhat sparse.

Two possible causes.

1> Either the cable, the port on the router, or the NIC is bad. The Media Disconnected is not a good sign.

The WINSOCK or TCP/IP stack has been corrupted. Since that's easy to fix, let's start there.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset [log_file_name]

Note: the log_file_name needs to be specified, e.g. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot and see if that helps.

If not, and the IPCONFIG looks the same, I'd be looking at the hardware side.

Wireless

Dear friend,

please note that I try the internet connection via a wireless connection on my laptop which is also equipped with LAN card, not used for the moment. Would it be possible that the system does not try to use the wireless connection and keep trying on the unconnected LAN connection? If so, what do I have to do?

Txs

No, it's not trying to connect to the unplugged connection. Does the cable connection work if you connect it to the router?

Perhaps you could specifiy the make/model of the ADSL router, as well as the make/model of the laptop, and the wireless adapter, unless it's built in.
