Unable to make ie8 default browser

I have two problems which i think are related the first is when i go to default
programs to set IE8 as default browser in custom it wont allow me and keeps changing back to current browser ? I use Google as my home page.
Secondly when i try click on a link in Windows live Mail it goes to a white blankpage with error message " Windows cannott find http:/ - Make sure
you typed the name correctly and then try again " this happens on all links
in all my Emails ? can someone help please

edit: "To make this work properly in Internet Explorer:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on Internet
Explorer. If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow."
