[SOLVED] IE& & 8 crashes
I have this xp computer, IE7 crashed immediately upon launching. It gave some kind of call stack error and mentioned 3rd party stuff, nothing specific. I did a fresh install of IE7, no change. I upgraded to IE8, it also crashes at the same time but just gives the generic send/don't send error report. Firefox/Chrome works fine.
I used ccleaner and did a system restore. What could be causing this? Is there anything I can do? thanks |

Re: IE& & 8 crashes
Most times issues occur when the system is infected or unstable to begin with. Unstable meaning missing or corrupt system files already existing on the drive at the time of installation.
Do you have SP3 installed on the system? It should be installed before IE7 or IE8 so make sure that is installed first. Have you tried running without add-ons ? How about in Safe Mode w/ Networking? Using CCleaner, the Registry feature, may only make the system worse, please discontinue the use of Registry Cleaners on your system.

Re: IE& & 8 crashes
Troubleshooting add-ons
It is frequently acceptable to use add-ons from trusted sources. But sometimes add-ons cause Internet Explorer to quit unexpectedly. Internet Explorer may quit unexpectedly if the add-on was poorly designed or if the add-on was created for an earlier version of Internet Explorer. When Internet Explorer quits unexpectedly, you may be prompted to disable the add-on. If Internet Explorer quits unexpectedly, try one or more of the following: * Try to update the add-on. * Disable the add-on, and then visit the same Web site. Verify that you have to have the add-on for the Web site. * If the features of the add-on are needed for a Web site, or if the features of the add-on enhance your browsing experience, enable the add-on. When an add-on is blocked from installation because the publisher is blocked, the Manage Add-ons interface displays an additional category for add-ons that are blocked. When you visit a Web site, and that Web site uses an add-on that is blocked, you receive a notification in the status bar. The notification may indicate that some content cannot be displayed because one or more add-ons that are required are blocked. Or, the notification may indicate that an add-on that is required is disabled. You can enable a blocked add-on in the Manage Add-ons dialog box or in the notification in the status bar. For more information about publishers that are blocked, follow these steps: 1. In Internet Explorer, click Help, and then click Contents and Index. 2. In the Help dialog box, click the Search tab, type blocked publisher, and then click List Topics. You can use the Manage Add-ons feature to help troubleshoot other Internet Explorer issues that are frequently caused by third-party components. Add the Manage Add-ons feature to your troubleshooting practices. http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

Re: IE& & 8 crashes
Launching IE with addons disabled caused IE not to crash as it was, but to freeze before loading any webpage. Attempting to close the program results with a visual c++ abnormal program termination error, then it closes fine.

Re: IE& & 8 crashes
I would run some anti-malware programs to make sure its clean, then reinstall the browser.
