connected but cannot surf

Hi

I am trying to fix my mums laptop for her. The pc says its connected at 54 mbps with an excellent signal strenth. But when i try to connect to the net via either ie or firefox it will not connect. I clicked "diagnose connection problems" and it says "windows did not detect any problems with your internet connection over HTTP and HTTPS, but was not able to make a successful connection over FTP.

I have tried the following methods to fix the problem:-

1) Pinged google.com, results 4 32 bytes 4 sent, 4 recieved, 0 lost

2) Opened CMD, Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults by typing: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults by typing: netsh int ip reset reset.log

3) ran Winsock XP Fix

I have no firewall running

This happens on different wireless connections

Your help would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Andy
