Unable to install IE 8

Hi Folks,
I am looking for information to help me solve a problem with installation for IE 8. I have tried all of the steps as per instructions forom the Microsoft IE 8 support page (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/9492...ItMyselfAlways). My OS is Windows Xp Professional. I have IE 7 for my browser. The only thing that i know is that I had a problem with my laptop (IBM T23), which kept the unit out of comission for a little over a month. April 28 was the last that I recieved updates when the laptop broke. When I got it repaired, The first update was on June 11 for IE 8 , which failed. I then recieved the auto updates on June 11 for Office, W-XP, IE7,and Defender, which they all installed properly. Now I have tried too many times to count, to install waiting updates. I have tried just Windows updates without IE8, and all other options but nothing works. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
