IE6 & IE8: Will not open Thunderbird when attempting to "send link" via email

IE6 upgraded to IE8
XP SP2

When attempting to "send link" or "send page" via email, IE6 and IE8 (upgraded to 8 in an attempt to resolve problem) produce error message stating that I need to set Outlook or Outlook Express as the default mail client. I use Thunderbird and have set IE to Thunderbird in Tools/Options as the mail client. Still, IE will not open Thunderbird when attempting to send a URL. Had this problem with IE6 and IE8 after upgrade.

Ideas?

PROBLEM SOLVED: Dumped Internet Explorer and permanently returned to Firefox.
