ie 8 and tabbed browsing

ever since it downloaded, ie8 refuses to open tabs. trying to open links in webpages in a new tab (right click>open in new tab), causes the browser to freeze for about a minute, then the link opens up in a new window. even clicking on the new tab button (ctrl+T) button won't work properly. it only works when i double-click it, and pressing ctrl+T does nothing at all. i've looked in the tabbed browsing options and it is definately enabled. changing other options such as opening links in new tabs or the current one do nothing.
any help is appreciated.

i take it from the multiple issues other people are having with ie 8 and the lack of response to my thread that i'll just wait for ms to patch it and hope it fixes it.
