IE just will not work

Recently repaired Windows XP currently running on SP2 and when trying to update it keeps telling me to use Internet Explorer to access the windows update website.

However as soon as IE opens and you try to go to a website, it fails and after closing it, the "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" message appears.

Is there a simple explanation and solution?

Can you open any other sites? is it all sites that have this problem or just MS update

No, its all sites. I can sometimes access the website, and it runs as well as can be expected, however, when you close IE it comes up with the message.

There is some issue with the settings of internet explorer , to resolve this issue try to reset internet explorer .
1 Open the internet explorer
2 Go to the Tools > internet options > Advance and finally click on the reset. this will solve your issue.
