Can open I/E but can't get hand tool; every mouse click beeps

I can open my internet explorer as well as use my mouse in all areas of windows xp except on the internet. Once I open internet explorer I get the home page but then cannot do anything. I can't even "x" out the page, it's just makes a "boinking" sound. I can move the mouse around and get an "arrow" but it does not change to a "hand" or allow me to click on any links. Has anybody heard of this? I have tried re-setting the modem (using verizon DSL), re-booting computer, clearing browsing history, etc. Thanks.

Solution: 1: Create restore point and take registry backup.
2: Delete all unwated software's, and toolbar, security software's. from program and feature.

3: Delete all temp files.
4: Disable all unwanted services from startup and then delete from registry.
5: reset internet explorer and register all .dll files.
6: scan with spyware removal and hijacthis and trojon removal tool.
7: Restart the computer and check windows update. if found and then update.

Re: Can open I/E but can't get hand tool; every mouse click beeps

Hello tschrope and Welcome to TSF

What version of IE are you using?
Have you tried reinstalling? If you uninstall IE7 it reverts back to IE6, test the browser using IE6. If it is ok, reinstall IE7

Here are instructions on how to remove for IE7 which is the most common version to date.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177

Step 1: Uninstall Internet Explorer 7

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK. It may take several seconds for your computer to compile a list of programs.
3. Scroll down through the list and click Windows Internet Explorer 7, and then click Remove.

Step 2: Verify that Internet Explorer 6 is restored
To verify that Internet Explorer 6 is restored, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type iexplore. Windows Internet Explorer opens.
3. On the Help menu, click About Internet Explorer. The About Internet Explorer window opens.
4. If the Version number begins with 6, you have successfully uninstalled Internet Explorer 7 and restored Internet Explorer 6.

If this method did not work for you, try method 2.

Step 1: Make hidden files and hidden folders visible

1. Click Start, and then click My Documents.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the Advanced settings list, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

Step 2: Uninstall Internet Explorer 7
To uninstall Internet Explorer 7, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe, and then click OK.
3. Follow the wizard instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 7.

Step 3: Verify that Internet Explorer 6 is restored
To verify that Internet Explorer 6 is restored:

Re: Can open I/E but can't get hand tool; every mouse click beeps

GeekGirl: Thank you for reply. We were having this same problem about a week ago and I was prompted to install an update (which I believe gave us IE 8?). Installing that update fixed the problem temporarily. It began doing the same thing again on Sunday. I will try all of your suggestions tonight and see what happens.

SamAnderson: Thank you for reply. I had already done #'s 2 and 3 of your suggestions. Unfortunately I did not create a restore point. I am not sure how to go about completing #'s 4 and 5 of your suggestions. I have Norton running on the P/C for spyware and virus. Thanks.
