IE8 and Firefox will not connect

This is a Shuttle Small Form Factor Running Windows XP, 3 GHZ 1GB Ram on board lan and video.
The problem is neither browser will connect to the internet. Firefox never worked on this computer, IE7 was working some it would not connect to secure pages, so I thought I would update it to IE8 and maybe it would fix it, nope. Now it will not connect at all. I can Ping, both names and IP addresses. The windows says the lan is fine with no errors or conflicts. This is what I have done so far.
Ipconfig /release and renew
Cleared the SSL
In Internet Options I set everything to default
I downloaded and Ran Winsock Fix
I ran a Registry Cleaner, XPRepairPro 4
I have been through Internet options a dozen times
I have disabled and enabled the lan
It is going through a router that is good, I use it regularly.
I need help Thanks Guys

Re: IE8 and Firefox will not connect

Your problem is even more serious than mine is. I'm having problems with Internet Explorer but thank goodness Firefox is working beautifully for me and doesn't seem to have any of the problems that I experience with IE, such as videos won't play and it won't display certain web pages etc.

Could someone tell me how to update the information here so I could change OS from XP to show Vista which I now have . Thanks,

Re: IE8 and Firefox will not connect

Check to make sure you have drivers for everything about (Go to device manager and see if there is anything with a yellow question mark next to the device, if there is then you will need drivers for it)

Also check that nothing has messed about with your host files (I think Spybot S nd D does this)

Re: IE8 and Firefox will not connect

I reinstalled the OS, did all the update, installed Firefox and all is well. I spent way to much time trying to get that software to work. My rule of thumb, if you have to spend more than 2 hours fixing what should be a simple problem just reinstall the OS. Many of my customers are computer ignorant, no one seems to backup anything and they loose their software. They bring the computer to you and want it back in 3 hours. Welcome to the computer business. I am an MCSE, and most of my beef is with Microsoft, they have lousy partner support so much so that I dropped out of the partner program. I think if MS wanted to support techs this idea might be good. Say your customer looses their install disk, or you replaced the hard drive and the restore is gone. MS should have a service that you could type in the activation code and check it for authenticity and allow the tech do download the OS. Heck I would pay for that service. Any problems with that idea?
