IE8 "Connecting" on New Tab Open

When I open a new tab in IE8 the word "Connecting" appears in the tab for as much as 5 seconds. During that time I can not do anything in that new window. Once the word Connecting goes away everything works normally.

What is it attempting to connect to?

That was somewhat like that in IE7. It is connecting to the "New Tab" page.

In IE7 the connecting process took less than a second. In IE8 it seems to take around 5 seconds.

Is it like that every single time you open a new tab?

Re: IE8 "Connecting" on New Tab Open

ya this is just a normal thing IE8 seems to do though sometimes the entire IE will not freeze
It may be quicker to just open a new IE8 page depending on ur CPU speed an what kind of connection u have
ex.wireless or hardwired

You may be right but doesn't that defeat the purpose of having tabs?

As I said earlier in this thread, I did not have this problem with IE7.

Re: IE8 "Connecting" on New Tab Open

I think I've had it before a couple times. Have you tried restarting the computer?

I was looking to speed this up too. Set the new tab option to blank page:
Tools => Internet Options => General - Tabs - Settings... => When a tab is opened, open = A blank page.

Fusion on this thread
http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/show...7/Main/435860/
led me to this.

About 2-3 seconds instead of 5, figure that should add up to a minute saving within a week...

You'll have to change the setting back to get those useful new tab page options - common tabs, closed tabs etc options. However it does appear to wipe the memory on the google toolbars new tab page.

I had exactly the same problem.
The cause was a plug-in 'Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper' which is a left-over from old Java plug-ins that is no longer needed with the latest Java plug-in but causes problems with IE8.
See Sun's bug report about the delay and them not doing a clean uninstall:

http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view...bug_id=6747116

The result is this remnant file lingers into the install of a new version of Java. Disable this add-on in Tools,Manage Add-ons and the slowdown goes away.
Having it disabled will not interfere with the operation of Java applets
(but make sure you have the latest version of Java).

Thanks. Disabling that Java plug-in did fix the problem!
