IE8 - not displaying pictures in Gmail?

Quick question that I hope has an easy answer due to, perhaps, just overlooking something obvious. Whenever I load e-mails in Gmail, up until this point, it would ask me if I would like to display the images in the e-mail. The option was right at the top of the e-mail and said "Display images below." Clicking that would, of course, display the images.

IE8 still has this option, but now if I click on it, I get no images whatsoever. I have tried multiple e-mails from multiple people and places but to no avail. I realize I must be just not seeing something (no pun intended), and I'm hoping someone here has the same issue, or had it and fixed it.

if you enable the display mixed content to the Internet zone in the security tab

Tools> Internet options> security > custom level > display mixed content > select enable

this solves the problem
