audio does not play in IE or firefox

hello, 2 days ago i was forced to restore my windows to factory due to a virus-related crash.

after the restore, i updated windows to SP3

since then, i can no longer hear any audio on sites such as youtube and pandora. youtube plays video just fine, pandora causes the browser to freeze for about 30 seconds before i can navigate to any other page.

so far i have tried:
-uninstalling and reinstalling firefox
-uninstalling and reinstalling adobe flashplayer
-updating realtek AC'97 audio drivers
-all troubleshooting tips on adobe website
-all troubleshooting tips on mozilla website
-searching the internet for hours in vain for other solutions

anyone else have any good ideas? this kinda drives me crazy because im a big music person =(

any help would be absolutely fantastic.

Edit: forgot to mention all other audio (WMplayer, itunes, etc) works fine
