Make sure that the Operating System and Internet Explorer are up-to-date by visiting the Windows Update Site and downloading all of the Critical Updates and Service Packs.

From what I read they are calling that the "garbage string bug". Instead of typing "www.microsoft.com" (no quotes) in the Address bar, you can type "microsoft" (again, no quotes) and hit CTRL+ENTER. This will actually add the "http://www" and ".com" portions of the URL for you automatically. But the interesting thing is that it also bypasses the garbage string bug if you type of bad URL.

First.....

Download WinsockFix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

Then....

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

I figured it out,,,,

Basically from my research, its all about the registry keys,,,obviously. So instead of fixin it manually and doin all the ipconfigurations,,,I found software that does it for me,,lol.

For those havin the same problem:

Go here from another PC:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Next copy it to a Floppy.

Install on infected PC and run. It will get you back and runnin. BUT, ya still need some sort of protection so this wont happen again. I mean the winsockfix will fix your problem, but check this out,,,,,

After i fixed my Pop's PC, I updated my Lavasoft Ad-Aware definitions. Ran a scan and found 32 infected keys. So this must be done for optimal performance.

All in all, everything is fine and this is the easiest route to take IMO.
