IE and NIS 2003 - No longer a happy marriage.

Ahoy-hoy.
First post, and I'll be damned if I'm not scrounging.

I'll make this mercifully brief - I usually run Windows ME with norton Internet Security 2003 with no problems. Yesterday I had the opportunity to upgrade to Windows XP.
This evening, I scraped that c*** off my HD and reverently placed ME back.

Unfortunately NIS doesn't appreciate what I went through, and now delights in denying all internet-based actions with IE. I can't access any page whilst the firewall is active. I get nothing.
I can disable the firewall, refresh, and all is well, and it doesn't block Firefox. Yet.
[Edit: Now it does. Bugger.]

I've uninstalled and reinstalled, I've manually set IE to be permitted, but it doesn't help.
Nobody on my regular forum has a clue so I've been referred here. I PRAY you can help me. It's not so much a problem for me, but for the rest of my family - They're set in the ways of IE and I don't trust them with the PC if it's not safe.

I beg, nay, plead with you - Aid me!

Hi,

What you say does not give me encouragment that I can help you, but thought I would answer anyway.

With NIS, have you gone into Personal Firewall,

Configure,

Set the Bar to Default

Click on: Select Custom Level

Make sure you select under Personal Firewall Block Everything, Until
You Select It.

Make sure you select under Java Applet Security: None: Allow Java
Applets.

Make sure you select under ActiveX Control Security: None: Allow
ActiveX Controls.

Check: Enable Access Control Alerts.

Click: OK

Select: Programs on the top Bar

Check: Turn on Automatic Program Control

* Scroll down the list of programs and highlight the programs you want to change. (you can also select automatic scan, but I don't use that)

When you do that select: Modify

When the pop up box comes up, select what you want it to do. ie:
Select: Permit for those you want to always load

Select: OK....then OK when done

That should get the job done.....I did have the 2003 version and now have the 2005 version, so there may be some small wording changes from mine, but I do remember they are close to the same.

Gee, I hope this helps you. Oh, one other thing, if using XP Pro (I am), then you need to select what user these options are for since you can configure for each user. Use your own judgement on that area.

Good Luck

Addendum: Shoot, forgot to say something: We wish you would skip your regular forum and become a regular on our forum....had to get that commercial in.

Well, I've done that, or at least 2003's version of it. All the values were set as you said already, but hopefully looking at them will get them working.
The reply box just refreshed with the firewall active, so fingers crossed.
*Ctrl+C's message just in case*

Nope, that didn't get it.

Unless they've been released in the past five minutes, I have.
It's annoying - I've never had these problems before and I can't for the life of me think why I'd be having them now.

Thanks for the help all the same.

Can I just ask - Would script blocking have anything to do with it?
Edit: Well, it seems the answer is no. I deleted a scriptblocking thing from HJT, and it seemed to work. But then it didn't.
Disabling Script Blocking doesn't work either, so... bah.

Well, I decided to get shut of it and use ZoneAlarm. Hopefully I've made the right choice, though it's a shame to see such a once-faithful program bite the dust with such little regard for my safety.
