[SOLVED] IE DNS issue

I have a problem on 2 machines running XP with IE (both 6 and 7) where I get the "page not found" response yet I can use the IP and get the page to resolve. Email and Opera work fine on this machine. You can resolve DNS at the command line etc.

I have tried

rollback
turning kaspersky off
reinstall (both IE's and XP)
winsock
reboot router
disabled plug-ins
run adaware and kaspersky scans
reinstalled xp over the top
plus several of the manual edit type approaches
I have installed 7, rolled back to 6 etc
I have returend everything to defaul, emptied cache

I'm kinda at a loss.

OK, I fixed it.

I ran a super deep virus scan and found this little sucker:

Win32.Zhelatin

I removed it and the problem went away.

I had to update the virus definitions and set the virus checker (kaspersky) to its most rigorous level.
