internet explorer - takes time to open

Hello,

I've been experiencing a problem with my computer for some weeks now.

1. When I open an IE window, it opens up quite fast, but it takes 10-20 sec's, sometimes more, before the page starts loading. This is the case regardless of the page and it happens every time a new window opens. Once open, there is nothing wrong with the internet speed...

2. Even computer folders like My Computer, My Documents, My pictures take a long time to open. Here it's a bit different though. I click and then up to 20 seconds pass before folder opens. However, once it opens it opens very fast.

3. It seems that something is using an extraordinary amount of memory on my computer. Even with the computer "idle" I sometimes register up to 1gb of allocated memory. I find nothing unusual using different antivirus, spyware removal prog's, etc

Can anything be done to resolve these problems?

Re: internet explorer - takes time to open

Hi and thanks for the welcome!

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite Pro M30, with Intel Pentium M 1.80GHz processor and 1GB RAM. It has WXP Pro with SP 2.

The security programs on it for the time being are AVG 8 Free Version, an older version (Ithink 6) of AdAware and with the hope of resolving this problem single handedly I recently installed Ccleaner that neither helped nor worsened the situation.
I have previously used Norton but really did not like it, so I got AVG for free instead of paying for something that seemed to accomplish very little. I have also tried some other spyware removal progs but they are presently uninstalled.

Hope this info gives you what you need!

Re: internet explorer - takes time to open

be sure to monitor what's going on with all the open & running processes. Press cntl+alt+del , then T for the task manager. Look at the processes tab. See what is taking up memory there in obscene amounts, and what is using the most processor time. Usually anything using more than about 10% processor time will cause a noticeable slowdown in other things like IE or opening folders and such.

Re: internet explorer - takes time to open

First thing, go into your browser objects and disable all those rediculous toys you have loading every time a browser window opens... (yes, they take time to load) I suggest keeping only the google tool bar.
Second set your home page to this...
http://www.google.ca/firefox/ (why? 1 it has google search bar and 2 that is about all it has. It takes no time to open. No bells, no whistles, it is F A S T
3 go into your browser properties box
Clear your cookies and cache, set the cache size to 10 megabytes (you have a fast connection, why bog your browser by having it search through a ton of cached images you rarely load anyway?)
4 Do a spyware scan. spyware, malware, uses your bandwidth to connect to other sites, causing your browser to connect slowly
5 disable your fileshare software- this uses a lot of bandwidth when someone is uploading or downloading from you. Let it run when you are using it, or not using your computer.
6 click start/ run/ enter.. msconfig
click services and uncheck the ones you do not need, keep antivirus, ONE spyware scanner, and things you need to load when you are online. Things like ODD firmware check (for example) do not need to run more than once a month. Do so and then disable it.
Disable start up items you do not need or recognise
(will also make your computer run faster)
7 unplug the power cord from the back of your modem (do not use the off button) (and router if you have one)
shut down your computer. Go get a pepsi, coffee, use the potty... anything to kill about 1 minute or so, then come back and plug in the modem and or router, power up your computer. (flushes the cache in the modem and forces the computer to re-read the IP information from your ISP)
8 contact your ISP tech support. They have tools they can run to check your connectivity, sync (dsl) Just because you are paying for a fast connection, does not mean you are getting one. Various factors affect this. Your ISP can define them according to your location and hardware set up... (don't expect a good connection on dsl in the basement, especially wireless. moisture (in the jacks) and concrete affect your connectivity.. just for example)

Re: internet explorer - takes time to open

Thanks gbalkam for your exhaustive list of tips. I have tried some of them and am in the process with the rest. I do notice faster page downloads, but there's still the same annoying delay after the IE window opens until the page starts to load.
I know for sure that I'm not receiving what I pay for as far as connection is concerned and I'm in touch with my provider to do something about that. However, it should still be fast enough to not cause this kind of delay.

Go the power, Here's the new toolbar cop log you requested! (I'll remember to ctrl+v this time

Thanks guys for continuing to help out!

Re: internet explorer - takes time to open

figured it was probably something in the browser "helpers" *scoffs* You are opening ie fast, so no computer delay, (ram, processor, fragmenting issues) page loads, according to the last post are coming in faster, this does indicate something is stealing bandwidth when IE opens. Problem is, trouble shooting, you have to try everything until the problem is fixed. I've done broadband tech support, so the steps I gave you, though lengthy are pretty much what the ISP tech will tell you, except I don't have the tools to see if you are in sync.
