[SOLVED] Internet Explorer 7 problems

Yesterday, I installed Windows XP service pack 3 early that day. Then I started looking around, and this site (facebook.com) had a feature that would only work with Internet Explorer 7. Well, I wanted to test the new feature, then I started thinking that having internet explorer 7 would help me to defend against spyware, viruses, worms, etc., anyway, so I decided to install IE7 later that night.

Well, it doesn't seem to be installed. It looks exactly like IE6. I did, however, notice that when I tab another window, the thumbnail page shows up and allows me to look at them on one window (although I'm not sure if that was on IE6). Not only that, but I can't get the feature on facebook.com to work. It registers my IE as IE6 still.

Looking at help > about internet explorer, I see that I have IE7 version 7.0.5730.13. I looked on a site that showed all the different versions of IE from I guess Internet Explorer 5, and I saw that for Service pack 3, I need version 7.0.600.... When I went to the Windows download page, the only IE7 download they had was the version I have now, which is still registering as IE6 and doesn't look much different.

The buttons I had still look the same, and I don't see anything different.

I did test the phishing bar by going to a known phishing site, and it did turn pink and prompt me to stay away from that page (along with a page that asked me if I wanted to continue or leave. Needless to say, I left).

The version I have is for service pack 1 according to the site on which I saw the timeline of Internet Explorer releases, but I've got service pack 3. When I go to the WIE website, it registers my computer as having service pack 2, not 3.

Is there a way to fix this?

And wow if I'd known you guys have a forum for internet explorer problems, I would have come here yesterday.

You guys have a forum for everything! =)

I just saw that I've got "Windows Genuine Advantage," which according to wikipedia, "advertises Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, which requires manual intervention to disable." I'm not really sure what this means, though.

Oh yeah, I read that with IE7, when deleting browsing history, the user isn't asked what he/she wants to delete, and instead it deletes everything.

My "IE7" is still asking me what things I want to delete.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 problems

Internet Explorer version: 7.0.5730.13 opens when I run it.

When I looked in Add/Remove Programs, Internet Explorer 7 was there.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 problems

also, the internet seems to be slow on connecting to some sites. I'm not sure why this is, I'm very sure I'm malware-free, though. it's annoying because I don't know why it's slowly connecting to some sites.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 problems

Well, the only site that was the reason I got IE7 was http://www.facebook.com

There's a chat type thing on there that will only work if I use internet explorer 7, but after installing the internet, it still reads that I am using IE6.

I don't really chat normally, I'm just trying to see what it's about, and if it's registering as IE6 on that site, it makes me wonder what other sites will register it as IE6 instead of 7.

Oh and like I stated earlier, the internet seems to be slow to connect to some sites. I can't think of the one site that stuck out. I just remember that when I clicked it, it took a while to connect, but it finally connected to the site. there were others as well that were slow to connect, but not as slow as that one. I'm pretty sure that site was one I googled when trying to find all the new changes with Internet Explorer 7.

Also, I've got my security settings to prompt about 1st party cookies, and to block 3rd party cookies, so maybe that could contribute to the slow connectivity.

I attached a picture of the prompt from the site.

These are the contents of the notepad file you wanted:

Re: Internet Explorer 7 problems

also, now that I've got IE7, opening windows on my desktop and then clicking folders inside of the window seem to take a bit longer to register.

It's not that long, but it's long enough for me to think I didn't even click the icon, so I click it again and then two of the same thing open.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 problems

It wouldn't let me install the update because the service pack I am using is newer than the one I'm trying to install.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 problems

Try to go on the website with another computer to make sure facebook's feature isn't broken, or use firefox and only keep IE to download MS updates like we all do.

Empty the cache and delete the cookies.

See methods 3 and 4 here :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378
If this is a retail installation you'll need an XP SP3 CD to use sfc.

Re: Internet Explorer 7 problems

I don't want to use firefox...

I wouldn't know how to delete the 'cache'...

and I don't know if this is a retail installation of SP3 or not... it was a windows update...
