Cant connect to the Internet

I am on a sony vaio laptop, it has XP Srve pack 2. I am connecting to a wireless router, and the laptop connects and It says that it has a excellent connection but it says i am offline and i cant even use an IM. But it seemed to download an automatic update. The laptop seems to be connecting properly but either something with XP or Internet Explorer is causing the problem..

Csn you use MSN or play online games
