HiHo!
Since I don't get any support from MS I'd like to ask the community for some support. Since my mainboard had to be replaced in march due to a hardware defect my local pc dealer re-installed Win XP home (german). SP3 pre-realese(v.3264) was installed also. For some time windows update worked correctly but now I am in some trouble when trying to install the "Kumulatives Sicherheitsupdate für Internet Explorer 7" (KB947864). Regarding the infos from the update pages this is a critical one and should be installed. However, when trying to do so the update seems to be downloaded but the installation during windows shutdown fails. De-activating usual suspects like anti-virus programs etc. did not solve the problem. After some investigation I found error code 0x8007F0F1 as well as it's meaning: The update is incompatible with installed packages. The update cannot be downloaded manually from MS update since it's recognized that the download did take place already. Searching the download "IE7-WindowsXP-KB947864-x86-DEU.exe" on my PC and starting installation mitght be not a good idea also. Either the installation stops for the same reason or it's done and Windows get's screwed up. By google I found only very few results for "KB947864" + "0x8007F0F1" and none of them helped me with my problem. So, this is the hour of the experts in this forum, whose help I would appreciate very much. How can problem be resolved, preferably without something like "windows re-install"? Any help is extremely welcome! Greetings from a guy living at the banks of a river in the east ![]() |

thank you for this clue, but this seems not to be so easy as it seems. When I had a look at the list of installed programs in the section "software" in the system control panel then, in the MS section of the list, I'm confronted with a long list of entries labelled with "Hotfix" plus a KBxxxxxx identifier which means nothing to me. There is nowhere some entry like Windows XP service pack 3 or something similiar. So I still have the problem and even more worse: After this disaster is resisted the temptation to install some pre-realease sp3 on my older backup PC. Today I started that machine the first time after 2 weeks and chose windows update. There I was offered to install sp3 and the whole installation including re-registration went smoothly. No complains so far. On the other hand, on my main PC I did not get this offer when I chose windows update. Windows update stubbornly only offers me the update I talked about in my inital posting and NOTHING else. And the installation still fails. I grow desperate about this affair. ![]() Can some friendly soul help me out of this sh** please?? Thanx for "listening" eastriverman |

Dear moderator!
Thanx a lot for your specific answer. I immediately tried to put your suggested scheme into practice but failed again. As you already suspected, the IE7 was not visible for normal uninstall and so I tried Start/Run, but it did not work since the path was not existent. Using the Windows search option on C:\Windows I got only 2 hits. The first hit was the program file "spuninst.exe" located in the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\a3dcbe5c7e23b2d2fe6484c7d20a7395\ This folder contains the subfolders "SP2GDR", "SP2QFE", and "update". The first two folders in turn contain several DLLs as well as the program files ie4uinit.exe , ieudinit.exe , and iexplore.exe. The last folder contains the program file update.exe from Microsoft version 6.2.0029.0 and, besides some other files, the file KB947864-IE7.CAT whose file name contains a KBxxxxx code identical that one of the failed update. The second hit of the search was the file "spuninst.exe.ref" located in the folder C:\Windows\System32\PreInstall\WinSE\wxp_x86_0407_v1\ At that point I contacted my local dealer who installed all of this stuff after the hardware defect and the outcome from this talk was: He used the product key attached to my PC to do a complete new installation of windows XP from a special customized CD containing Windows XP with integrated SP3 release candidate v.3264. After explaining my problem to him he stated that some other customers have the some problem and he argued that this is the liability of Microsoft due to some bugs in the SP. There is no fix right at hand but they try to find a solution. Well, this reminds me fatally of a game of "ping pong" with the dealer on one side of the table and Microsoft on the other side. and me, of course, as the ball bashed to and fro ![]() Seemingly, I'm deeper in the brown mass than ever before. Thinking about my options I'd like to ask the following questions: (1) Since my XP installation is not the normal one with de-installable components in system/sofware I still need a recipe to get rid off this obviously buggy pre-release version of XP without the need to make a complete re-install of XP loosing all my programm installations and having to install all hardware drivers again which is a dangerous business for a layman. Is there some sort of electronic first aid kit for cases like this and can I have it? (2) Should I start "spuninst.exe" not caring about the folder where it is located and try to de-install IE7 or other components? (3) I just downloded the official SP3 (313.1 megabytes) directly from MS. Is it a good idea to install it without de-installing the release candidate before? And will this solve my problems? Thanks again for the support so far. I'll go down to the river now, forget about my troubles here for some time and enjoy the nice weather. All windows users should do so from time to time ; lets you life longer ![]() Best wishes to all eastriverman |

System File checker: sfc/ scanow **Note: You will need A Windows XP CD for this exercise**
Please post back with the results.[/quote] Dear moderator! Sorry for my late answer, I was occupied with my job. The result of the action you proposed in your last posting is as follows: After inserting my Win XP home CD and quitting the CD menu I performed the start/run action and was confronted with two successive alert boxes (see also attachments): box 1: <Windows Dateischutz> Bitte warten sie, während Windows überprüft, ob alle geschützten Windows-Dateien intakt sind und die Originalversionen verwendet werden. <Wiederholen> <Details> <Abbrechen> Well, since this forum "talks" english I'll try a translation which in turn will most likely not be identical to the original english text of the boxes but will catch the contents (hopefully) correctly: box 1: <Windows file protection> Please wait while Windows checks if all protected Windows files are intact und if the original versions are used. <progress bar> <Quit> box 2: <Windows file protection> Files which are required for the proper execution have to be copied into the DLL-cache. Insert the Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD now. <Repeat> <Details> <Quit> The action stops here, since the one cannot leave the box by clicking on any of the 3 options. To stop this game one has to click on <Quit> in box 1. Obviously, my XP installation "believes" that it was installed from the above mentioned "Win XP Pro SP 3" disc and does not care about my old XP cd which does not contain any of the service packs. Hmmm........ Probably the problem can be solved by having that disc. Is there a CD image of that disc legally available (download) from Microsoft? If so, I could use my CD burning program to burn it on a cd, repeat the above mentioned action, and see what happens. So far, so bad. What Options are left for me at that point? Again, thanx a lot for supporting me in this "drama" so far. Best regards eastriverman |
